The Royal Mint minted 5 million of these. Part of the mintage was melted in the UK to recover the copper for the war effort. The rest were shipped to Hong Kong on two ships. One made it but after the Japanese took Hong Kong in late December 1941, it supposedly rounded up all coinage and melted it to support their war effort. The second ship was sunk in transit to Hong Kong. Most say that less than 100 pieces are extant today which accounts for its rarity.

1 comment numismatist6 Tue, 09 Jun 2020 08:06:07 -0700 Italy 1903 25 centesimi /showphoto.php?photo=3110&title=italy-1903-25-centesimi&cat=500

by: numismatist6

Description: This is a two year type coin, only minted in 1902 and 1903 and the only Italian coin of this denomination. The reverse (tails) design depicts an aerial view of mounds in the Marching Bear Group. Inscriptions are “EFFIGY MOUNDS,” “IOWA,” “2017,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Effigy Mounds National Monument was first established as a national site in 1949. The park protects one of the largest remaining concentrations of ancient American Indian earthworks in the United States. It is considered a sacred landscape by members of many modern–day tribes whose ancestors once lived here. The majority of the mounds were constructed between one thousand and two thousand years ago — often to inter the dead, but sometimes for ceremonial purposes, or to tell important stories. The park is home to more than 200 mounds in a wide variety of forms, including more than 30 animal or bird–shaped “effigy” mounds for which the park is named. Often more than 100 feet long individually, many of these animal and bird shaped mounds are perched high atop rugged bluffs overlooking the adjacent Mississippi River. Aside from preserving these tangible links to an ancient and highly creative people, the park features outstanding views of the Mississippi River Valley, and hosts many of the native plant and animal communities that sustained people in this area for millennia. Much of the original milling equipment is still in place, and visitors can tour the mill. Inscriptions are “OZARK RIVERWAYS,” “MISSOURI,” “2017,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” Ozark National Scenic Riverways was established in 1964 to protect 134 miles of the Current and Jacks Fork Rivers in the Ozark Highlands of southeastern Missouri. The park encompasses 80,785 acres of unique natural resources, including a world–class spring system that is unparalleled in North America, more than 400 caves, and other special geologic features. The rivers offer remarkably clean, clear water that is complemented by the breathtaking blue shade of the waters of the large springs. The spectacular natural beauty of the area attracts park visitors to participate in a variety of recreational opportunities, such as john boating, canoeing, swimming, and fishing. Hiking, hunting, and horseback riding are also enjoyed across the landscape. In addition to the unique natural features of the Ozarks, the National Park Service preserves the heritage and lifeways of the Ozark culture, which was heavily shaped by the remote and rugged landscape. The park manages 249 historic structures throughout the park and also preserves the history and remnants of prehistoric peoples who settled in the region during the past 12,000 years.
