Rome - Legion X Fretensis Counterstamps (x2)

Description: The price of these Judean (Syria) Legionary counterstamps is high in the market but I try to acquire all Legion X Frentensis material that I can find. Countermarks were applied in the late 1st C. A.D. OB: Bust in oval countermark. Rev: galley in rectangular countermark on a Judea Capta bronze (?). For this exact type (perhaps this one) see Hendin # 6644. For the suspected host coin see Hendin 6472-4. Countermarks are VF on a fair host. The host may be a Judea Capta series coin of Vespasian from the mint of Caesarea Maritima, H#6472. It's ~ 22mm at 3.59 g. Description: Gordian was the first to strike the reverse design of Moesia standing between a Bull and Lion (some with variations). The city of Viminacium, established in 239 A.D. became a very large city in Moesia Superior as the years went on. Extensive excavations are now underway with impressive results and a long way to go. OB: IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG; "Emperor Marcus Julius Philippus Augustus" Rx: PMS C-OL VIM // AN V; Moesia standing from the front facing left, both hands extended above an bull to the left turned to the right and a lion to the right turned to the left. Legend means: 'Province Mœsia Superior Colonia Viminacium // Anno septimus', (Colony of Viminacium province of Upper Moesia // Year 5). Viminacium was founded by Gordian III in 239 or 240 (Year I). On the reverse, the Province or Tyche of the city is placed between the emblems of the Legions VII (Bull) and IV (Lion). Philip was born in Bostra in Trachonitis, province of Arabia, hence the nickname of the emperor. He is appointed prefect of the Praetorium after the death of Timésithée, the father-in-law of Gordian III, in 243. Philip makes or lets Gordian murder early in 244 and then hastens to conclude an infamous peace with the Sassanids. He pays them a tribute of 500,000 deniers. He named his son Philip Caesar in 244 and his wife Otacilia Severa augusta. In 247, Philip raises his son to augustat. He led a brilliant campaign against the Quades and Carpi who had invaded Dacia. The great event of Philip's reign is the commemoration of the millennium of Rome which begins on April 21, 247. Several usurpers, including Jotapian and Pacatian, proclaim themselves august at the end of the reign. Philippe charges Decius, commander of the Pannonian legions, to restore order on the Danube. The troops, against his will, proclaim Decius Augustus in June or July 249. Philip died fighting the troops of Decius in September 249. AE 29 (mm) Sestertius; struck ~ 245 A.D.

Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Two Nikai standing vis-à-vis, holding shield set on palm; flanking base, two seated captives. Krzyzanovska dies VII/25; SNG France 1236 (same dies). Good VF, brown and green patina. From the Douglas O. Rosenberg Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 270 (14 December 2011), lot 230 (since cleaned). Judea - Ascalon Legion X Counterstamp

Description: Time of Vespasian and Titus - Pseudo-autonomous municipal coin of Ascalon (coastal city between Tel Aviv and the Gaza strip), a principle Roman held city and Legion X (Ten) permanent encampment. Extremely historical coin of the period of the First Jewish Revolt (66 - 70 A.D.). This exact coin is depicted in "The Handbook of Biblical Numismatics" - Mel Wacks; see below). This type is in Hendin's (6th ed.) "Guide to Biblical Coins" # 6642. AE16 (16.11 mm) 3.89 g 4H, aVF. OB: Veiled and turreted bust of Tyche r.; 'X' (w/ bar over or under the X) in incuse rectangular countermark; Rx: galley right, ~OP (date). Not and impressive looking piece but very historical and part of my Legion X series, nonetheless the piece was expensive! cf. Description: Not an impressive coin but my first Legionary counterstamp. I believe the host coin is a Trajan (perhaps Hadrian) with an obvious 'desert patina' and my best interpretation so far is a 'thunderbolt' of Legion XII Fulminata stationed in Cappadocia or perhaps in greater Syria. Judaea - 1st Jewish War

Description: AE Prutah of the 1st Jewish War against the Romans and particularly the 10th Roman Legion (Fretensis). The revolt took place between 66 - 70 C.E.; this coin is dated year '2' and was struck 67-68 A.D. OB: Amphora with handles, no lid; Rx: Vine Leaf on small branch, archaic Hebrew legend means "The Freedom of Zion". Very historical coin, aVF, 18.3 mm, 2.88g (6h).

Description: A young Marcus Aurelius provincial AE issue, or at least that's what I bought it as. I always thought he was the most fascinating emperor, particularly after reading his "Meditations" book twice. It was an explanation of his Stoic philosophy. I don't seem to be able to find much on this coin, can anybody help?

This AE Prutah is dated Year 16 which equates to the modern dating of 29-30 A.D. - the golden period of Jesus of Nazareth's ministry and just before the traditional date of the cruxifiction.
