This design was struck in nickel from 1927 to 1938. Here again this issue overlaps the issue that is considered the 50 pfennig of the Nazis. This year of issue (1937 J) falls in between two Nazi 50 pf. designs while retaining the Weimar design. This year/mintmark (Hamburg) is the 3rd scarcest of the series with 300k struck. This nice example is problem free and red/brown. The design of all German coins during the Weimar Republic is excellent, following on the heels of the Art Nouveau period. Four Reichspfennig coins were issued in 1932 as part of a failed attempt by the Reichskanzler Heinrich Brüning to reduce prices through use of 4 Reichspfennig pieces instead of 5 Reichspfennig coins. Known as the Brüning-Taler or Armer Heinrich ("poor Heinrich"), they were demonetized the following year.
