Probus - Victoria Germ. Antoninianus

Description: One specialty in the Roman coin series is "Rome and Germany", coins that usually commemorate the nearly continuous battles that Rome had with "barbarians" and the subsequent peace. Probus issued a number of these, several of which you can see here in the Moneta Coin Museum. Probus (276 - 282 A.D.); IMP C PROBUS AVG. Reverse: a large victory trophy flanked by two captives, VICTORIA GERM around with SPQR in exergue. This example retains most of the silvering. Here the photo is poor, in hand a much better coin, still XF. This was struck c. 278 AD. VM# 52/1, Sear 3275, C.766, RIC 223.

Description: Antoninianus (bronze) of Probus (276 - 282 A.D.); IMP PROBVS PF AVG. Reverse: SOLI INVICTO, XXI in exergue. Quadriga running left driven by Sol. Here the portrait faces right, apparently a scarce variety that I find no reference for but RIC 200 type.

Description: Probus (276 - 282 A.D.); VIRTUS PROBI AVG, Hemeted bust left, holds Spear and Shield. Rx: ADVENTVS PROBI AVG; Probus on Horseback advancing left, Captive seated before; "R" in exergue. This coin refers to the arrival of Probus to Rome in 277 A.D. RIC V.2# 166g

Description: Cornelia Salonina, Augusta, was the wife of Gallienus and the mother of Valerian II and Saloninus. She was murdered with her husband in 268 A.D. Antoninianus OB: SALONINA AVG.; Salonina. Augusta, A.D. 254-268. AR antoninianus (20.4 mm, 3.32 g, 5 h). Antioch mint, struck A.D. 267. SALONINA AVG, diademed and draped bust right, wearing stephane, set on crescent / VENVS AVG, Venus seated left, holding scepter and apple, PXV in exergue. RIC 86; RSC 113. VF+.

Description: Cornelia Salonina was the wife of Gallienus and the mother of Valerian II and Saloninus. She was murdered with her husband in 268 A.D. Antoninianus OB: SALONINA AVG.; Rx: VESTA seated left, holds patera and sceptre; snake is exergue. Struck in 267 A.D. Good silver with excellent strike on the reverse & clear letters. VF+. 2.65 gm. 20 mm. S2948, C.143, RIC 32(s) VM# 55. Salonina Æ Denarius. Rome, AD 265-267. SALONINA AVG, draped bust right, wearing stephane / VESTA, Vesta seated left on throne, holding patera and sceptre. Officina in exergue. Very Rare.

Description: Claudius II Gothicus (268 -270 A.D.). This scarce type celebrates C. Gothicus' famous victory over the GOTHS, one of those seminal events that changed the history of the world. In 269 AD he marched against an immense army of Goths, and though the Roman army was heavily outnumbered, Claudius won a great victory over the invaders at a battle fought at Naissus in Upper Moesia. In contact with the Goths the Roman army contracted a plague which spread through the army and claimed Claudius himself after a reign of only two years.
