Crispus was the eldest son of Constantine I "The Great" with his first wife Minervina. As a teenager he was made Caesar in late 316 and was soon off to serve and train. He became an honored military leader by first leading a campaign against the Germanic tribe, the Alamanni, which this coin celebrates. His second great victory, against a much greater force, was the defeat of Licinius' navy. The capture of a large number of transport vessels allowed a bridge (flotilla) to be built across the Dardanelles, allowing his father to march his Legions into Asia to finalize the defeat of Licinius in the Second Lincinian War.

The reverse legend HOC SIGNO VICTOR ERIS recalls the dream of Constantine, which led him to place the Christogram on the shields of his troops at the battle of Milvian bridge. Rare.

Constantine's early coinage featured Mars as his patron deity, but by 310 Sol was becoming increasingly more prominent. Constantine's increasing devotion to the sun-god was an important stage in his eventual embrace of the "great god" represented by Christianity. Sol was in fact the last pagan deity to appear on a Roman coin, save for the Jupiter coinage struck by Licinius before his defeat by Constantine, prefiguring the first Christian coins struck by Constantine's sons. This particular example has a rich multi-hued patina, with deep green fields and coppery highlights, with a great portrait in the distinctive Lugdunum style, struck on a broad flan.
The following NGS article summarizes Constantine's Christian connection: http://www.nationalgeographic.com/lostgospel/timeline_10.htmlMonetaSun, 15 Mar 2009 07:49:59 -0700Constantine the Great - Trier

This coin was struck in the early years of Constantine's reign, shortly after he declared himself augustus, from Treveri, his capital in Gaul. At this time, his power was limited to the western half of the empire. To further his political goals, Constantine struck coins featuring Mars as his patron deity, in contrast to the other emperors. Sharp detail and very little actual wear, with nice style on a broad flan, but some weakly struck areas.MonetaSat, 14 Mar 2009 15:32:20 -0700
