Crispus was the eldest son of Constantine I "The Great" with his first wife Minervina. As a teenager he was made Caesar in late 316 and was soon off to serve and train. He became an honored military leader by first leading a campaign against the Germanic tribe, the Alamanni, which this coin celebrates. His second great victory, against a much greater force, was the defeat of Licinius' navy. The capture of a large number of transport vessels allowed a bridge (flotilla) to be built across the Dardanelles, allowing his father to march his Legions into Asia to finalize the defeat of Licinius in the Second Lincinian War. Constantine's increasing devotion to the sun-god was an important stage in his eventual embrace of the "great god" represented by Christianity. Sol was in fact the last pagan deity to appear on a Roman coin, save for the Jupiter coinage struck by Licinius before his defeat by Constantine, prefiguring the first Christian coins struck by Constantine's sons. This particular example has a rich multi-hued patina, with deep green fields and coppery highlights, with a great portrait in the distinctive Lugdunum style, struck on a broad flan.
