A gorgeous coin in pristine condition, w/ 30k struck. Also available in a 50 D denomination (100k minted). The 100 Drach. was also minted in .900 gold (10 or 20 k minted). The 1967 Revolution nearly resulted in a communist take-over, instead a military coup took power for seven years. Their rule lasted until 1974.
On 21 April 1967, just weeks before the scheduled elections, a group of right-wing army officers led by Brigadier General Stylianos Pattakos and Colonels George Papadopoulos and Nikolaos Makarezos seized power in a coup d'etat. The colonels preferred to call the coup a "revolution to save the nation". Their official justification was that a "communist conspiracy" had infiltrated Greece's bureaucracy, academia, press, and military, to such an extent that drastic action was needed to protect the country from communist takeover. Thus, the defining characteristic of the Junta was its staunch anti-communism. (wikipedia)
