This beautiful design, while common, holds the claim of being the first regular issue coin in the world in the now popular format of bi-metallic composition. The reverse features a depiction of the Piazza del Quirinale. The Quirinal Palace is the official residence of the President of the Italian Republic. What might also be a first is the inclusion of Braille lettering (⠨⠇⠄⠼⠑⠚⠚) on the reverse which represents the '500' lire denomination. I have yet to find who the distinctive portrait represents. With the feathered wing you could conclude it is a modern representation of Mercury, a common theme in the ancient Roman Republic. The coin was designed by Laura Cretara.
I say this is the first bi-metallic coin but the mint in Rome also struck a bi-metallic coin for San Marino in 1982. That coin is also shown here in the Moneta Museum.
