Saloninus was given the rank of Caesar upon the death of his older brother Valerian II. He was sent to the German frontier in 260 A.D. (date of this coin) where he quarreled with Postumus over the disposition of some booty taken from the Germans. When Valerian was captured, Postumus seized the opportunity to have himself declared emperor by the troops. Thereafter he invaded Cologne where Saloninus had his headquarters. In response the garrison elevated Saloninus to the rank of Augustus. Shortly the garrison surrendered and Saloninus was put to death by Postumus.
