These present some iconic images associated with the French Revolution: Fasces, Liberty cap, flags, drums and cannon. These are central pieces to the Monnaies De Confiance series of necessity tokens, in the face of near worthless paper assignats, several tokens were issued for various reasons, not least of which were to pay employees. These were crudely struck in Lyon in copper & Brass, this is the copper issue, which is more common. See here also a much more worn, and scarce, brass issue. Also see the Monneron Brothers for the bulk of this French Revolution series.
OB: CLEMANSON, ET Cp Nvs PLACE CONFORT A LYON (around); LAN VI DELA LIBERTE '- (in exergue).
RX: VIVRE LIBRE OU MOURIR (Live Free or Die, around); MEDAILLE - DE CONFIANCE DE 2 S- A ECHANGER CONTRE DES ASSIGNAT ET- MANDAT DETOUTE VALEUR - M DCC XCII (1792).
There is a very rare variety, using the same flan type (copper & maybe brass too). It retains the central Liberty Cap topped fasces but the flags, cannon and drums are replaced with the words "LA NATION, LA LOI, ET LA ROI" on the left and right of the fasces. These are extremely rare with most reference books having only a drawing. These were quickly rejected because of the words "ET LA ROI" which referred to King Louis XVI.
Not much is known about the Clemanson operation in Lyon, another hot-bed of Jacobin activity in France. He may have been an iron monger there during the Revolution.
