The elephant coins of the Belgian Congo are probably the most recognizable and desirable of this country. The sad history is that Europeans exploited this country terribly. The elephants were issued in 1, 2, 5 & 50 Franc denominations from 1943 to 1949 with the 50 Franc silver only struck in 1944 (1 M minted). Often impaired, this example is a very decent one, all are low relief and only .500 silver.
