Part of the wonderful USA commemorative half dollar series, this one celebrates the Texas Centennial (100 Years of Statehood) which was in 1934. The is considered the most elaborate design, and some thought too elaborate. I think it's fantastic but not as fine as another owner here in the Museum. This first year issue (1934 - 1938) was only struck in Philly while the other year issues can also be found from Denver and San Francisco. Each year and mint have their own strike characteristics. The 1934 has the largest mintage by far at 61.5 k.
The small portraits on the reverse are of Sam Houston and Stephen Austin, both of whom have major cities named after them. The famous words "Remember the Alamo" are below a winged Liberty.
