In 1782 the Bald Eagle was selected as the national emblem of the United States by the Continental Congress. Due to many factors by the 1960's the number of nesting pairs was down to about 400 pairs. Through the efforts of conservationists the population has come soaring back. Obverse design, by Joel Iskowitz, features a beautiful Eagle in flight. The reverse, by Jim Licaretz, shows the Great Seal of the United States from 1782 to 1841. Authorized in 2004, the mintage was limited to 500 k, in fact 119.2 k were struck in Uncirculated and another 294.6 k were struck in proof.
