Russian Empire Centennial Commemorative of the Defeat of Napoleon in 1812. Fabulous double-headed eagle design is by Borodino. This rare and extremely sought after Russian Rouble struck to celebrate the centennial of the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1812. The historical significance of this coin can not be over-estimated and I'm anxious to see the design Russia will produce for the bicentennial. This wonderful design is representative of the Russian numismatic artform at its very finest. Struck at the St. Petersburg mint under Elikum Babayantz during the reign of Nicholas II. I'm seeking an exact translation of the reverse - can you help? Nice light & even golden toning. This coin was sold at a Heritage Auction (NYC Jan 3 2012) for $3250, before fees.

In Russia, the double-headed eagle is one of the nation’s most prominent national symbols, although there are several theories behind the meaning of this unusual creature. Some historians theorize that in 1497, when Ivan III borrowed the idea of the two-headed eagle from the Byzantines, he wanted to associate himself with the power of the fallen empire. From then on, the double-headed eagle was often employed by the monarchy and frequently featured on coronation regalia. However, since the two heads face different directions, it’s widely believed that the double-headed eagle represents the geographical position of Russia, as it spans from the Baltic Ocean in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west.
