This is one of the very few denominated pieces featuring a portrait of Adolf Hitler. This is denominated as a 1 Schilling and as the Third Reich attempted to introduce propaganda into Austria for the purposes of convincing the populace to unite with Germany, these were given out in exchange for an Austrian Schilling donation. This unification eventually occurred with the Austrian Anschluss in 1938. See Germany > Third Reich for examples of the German Opferpfennige and Mark, also being the only denominated pieces featuring a portrait of Hitler of Germany.
See "Medallic Portraits of Adolf Hitler" by Colbert and Hyder for more information. This piece in # C-15 in that book. Obverse is like the Hitler election medals of Germany of 1929 & 1930; legend is "*ADOLF HITLER * DER FUHRER AUS DER NOT" [Adolf Hitler the Leader Out of the Hardship (or Want)]. The reverse legend: "NATIONALSOZALISTISCHE-DEUTSCHE-ARBEITER-PARTEI" [National Socialistic German Workers Party (NSDAP)]; "GAU-TIROL - VORARLBERG/OPFER-SCHILLING" or ["District Tirol-Vorarlberg, Donation Schilling."]
For students & researchers: I can provide a digital .pdf copy of the only article that covers Anschluss propaganda issues by the NAZI 3rd Reich of Germany. Like the book above it's by Colbert & Hyder and appeared in the Feb 1975 issue of "The Numismatist." It's file size is too big to post here but I will email it upon request.
