The area of Somalia became strategically important after the completion of the Suez Canal in 1869. It's located on the "Horn" of Africa in the northeast. Britain declared it a protectorate in 1888 but he Sultan of Zanzibar sold it to Italy in 1895. Britain regained control again in 1941, during the occupation of northern Africa in 1941. It was returned to Italy as a UN Trusteeship in 1950. This is when this one year type coin featuring the head of an elephant was struck in Rome. My interest in it is that it was designed by the famous Romagnoli who designed so many wonderful coins of Italy. This coin, being the lowest denomination, has the second lowest mintage at 4 M.
