Marcus Ulpius Trajanus (98 - 117 AD). Upon his becoming Emperor, Trajan decided it was time to expand the Empire. This was usually done to expand trade and provide territory upon which retired soldiers could make a living according to the military service contract. The battle for Dacia involved the building of the famous 20+ arched bridge across the Danube River, which was a engineering marvel. Conquest of Dacia, along with territories in the east led to four new provinces and the greatest extent that the Roman Empire ever reached. A whole series of reverse themes can be assembled by collectors commemorating Trajan's extensive conquests and infrastructure expansions. He was a great emperor at the apex of the Roman Empire.
