Marcus Annius Verus was born in Rome in A.D. 121. Stoic philosopher and author of the book "Meditations." He was an excellent ruler in troubled times, marked by numerous frontier wars and rampant disease. Adopted son of Antoninus Pius, he became Caesar in A.D. 139 and Augustus from A.D. 161- 180. His wife, Faustina Junior was also featured on many coins. This coin celebrates victory over the German tribes as M.Aurelius had spent considerable time fighting them from his base of operations in Carnuntum (30 mi. down the Danube from Vienna).
