Constantine I, as Augustus (307 - 337 A.D.)
struck by Constantine I
Treveri, 310-313
OB:- IMP CONSTANTINVS AVG; laur dr bust right
Rx:- MARTI CONSERVATORI; Mars standing right, leaning on shield, holding spear; PTR in ex, T|F in fields
RIC VI Tr 858; Fail 204
24mm; 4.5g; follis
This coin was struck in the early years of Constantine's reign, shortly after he declared himself augustus, from Treveri, his capital in Gaul. At this time, his power was limited to the western half of the empire. To further his political goals, Constantine struck coins featuring Mars as his patron deity, in contrast to the other emperors. Sharp detail and very little actual wear, with nice style on a broad flan, but some weakly struck areas.
