After nearly 140 years of being kicked around by Russia and Prussia, at one point being absorbed entirely, Poland reemerges as an independent state following WWI. Under a German-Austrian Regency Poland issued a short series of WWI occupation coins in iron (and some errors on zinc planchets) before issuing coins under their Polish Republic in 1923. Being made of iron they are difficult to find without a certain amount of rust or signs of harsh cleaning to remove that corrosion. Shown here is a common 5 Fenigow piece with a bit of corrosion but well struck. The 'FF' mintmark was only used for this short series of coins indicating the mint at Stuttgart Germany.
