I wanted an example that was well struck, with excellent preservation and the first year of issue. This is a very well struck example with very little abrasion on the fields. When graded and slabbed I hope this historic first year issue will reach MS 64 or higher.
Designed by Bella Lyon Pratt, design incorporated a new design element know as sunken relief (incuse). These coins saw limited use in the West and were rarely encountered elsewhere. There are three types. The Circulation issues were not very popular among numismatists. They also came in 'Sandblasted' (Matte) proofs in 1908, and '11-'15. Satin Proofs were made in 1909 - 1910. I was inspired to get another of these coins because, after a century of controversy the identity of the proud Indian Chief has finally been determined without a doubt. He's Brule' Sioux Chief Hollow Horn Bear. ANA member or not you can read all about the newly discovered and confirmed research in the Nov 2017 issue of the "Numismatist" magazine at this: [ link ]
