This is the other "authenticity in doubt" issue seen in KM under this Soviet. The other is the 'Lenin' dollar with Yuan reverse. Please see that listing in this Museum for further details. I am in the camp that believes these are authentic and struck for presentation. Money Company auction, Jan 1979, lot #226. Their listing states: 1931 Hunan Province Communist Dollar. Y-502 (old KM). Described by some as a controversial issue, it is still believed by many experts to be a proper issue of the Hunan Communist Government and quite rare. Legend translates: Soviet Government of Hunan Province."

Here are a number of RARE articles on Communist Chinese Soviet coins & notes from the Moneta Library:

Interesting. Even if this turns out to be fake or spurious, it's still a nice curiosity piece. Thanks for sharing.

Even though the two pieces in question have more recently (~20 years ago) come under scrutany the 'fabric' matches some of the acknowledged authentic pieces from '31 - '34. They are of good silver and the weights are good. Assuming they are not contemporary with the Soviets then they were struck soon after the formation of the PRC. This example was dirty and has seen some wear. The side portrait of the 'Lenin' dollar (the only one that can be obtained) appears in the very first monograph by Raeburn that was presented in 1937! (linked above). It's very possible that the Lenin's that do rarely come to market are restrikes of the originals. When taken as 'inauthentic' these pieces are considered part of the fine tradition of "Fantasies" that are rife in the modern (including cast coins) Chinese field. As such they are very 'collectable' and receive high bids at auction.
