King Carol I. I acquired this coin and the 1914 issue to explore the design/engraving work of Tasset. Sure enough the Hammer & Sickle origins for which I am searching is incorporated here, or at least the sickle is. Tasset was the designer/engraver of the earliest appearance of the Hammer and Sickle motif in the Chilean Pesos of 1894/5 (see Chile). This coin design may also serve my project for "National Maiden & Ceres" coins. Mintage for 1911 is the lowest of the 4 year issue at 1M struck.
The pagan pantheons of various Indo-European and Slavic peoples feature a goddess called Mara or Morana, who traditionally held a sickle in her left hand. In Hinduism the goddess of death Kali, sister of Shiva, holds a sickle in her left hand. [VLADIMIR KHUTAREV; "Russia Beyond"]
