LUCIUS VERUS, (161 - 169 AD) Dupondius: OB: L VERVS AVG [ARM PARTH] MAX; Portrait with near EF detail. Rx: TR POT VI IMP IIII COS II, (~ 166 AD); Victory holding shield and palm frond, inscription VIC PAR on shield supported by palm; VF+ with some roughness, Very scarce type in dupondius. Sear '74 #1455; RIC 1458; BMC 1315; Sear 5403.
Lucius Verus was adopted by Antoninus Pius at the same time as Marcus Aurelius but was not raised to Caesar status at that time. He was made co-emperor upon the accession of Marcus Aurelius (the philosopher emperor) and married his daughter Lucilla. He was quite successful in his wars with Parthia & Armenia, thus this victory issue. However, he was prone to a life of luxury and sometimes did not enter the field with his legions.
