OB: ROSS GRIFFITHS - GLEESON, - ARIZONA. Rx: GOOD FOR - $1.00 - IN - MERCHANDISE - Not Transferable
[the designation as 'Not Transferable' is a rare statement on a token]. Rarity R9 (3 - 6 known).
Gleeson is the site of a large abandoned mining operation 16 miles east of Tombstone Arizona and on the Cochise County Ghost Town Trail. American Indians mined this area for turquoise earlier than the 1870's which is when white men showed up exploring for minerals. This is why the area was known as Turquoise before 1900. The mining camp was moved and became known Gleeson. By 1909 the community had a population of about 500 people. A huge fire in 1912 destroyed most of the town but it was rebuilt and dwindled by 1940. A few people still live in the area so it's not quite a ghost town - yet.
