During the issue period of 1789 this French colony was known as Colony of Cayenne (like the pepper). This area, particularly the offshore islands became known for the French prison of "Devil's Island" with it's famous prisoner Capt. Alfred Dreyfus. I've been assured this is an original piece and not one of the many common counterfeits struck in contemporary times in Birmingham, England. This is the most common year, the others being quite scarce.
