In Feb 1644, the rebel leader Li Zicheng (the first of the Ming rebels) proclaimed himself king in Xi'an in the province of Shaanxi. He took the dynastic title of 'Shun' with the reign title of Yongchang, and began casting coins. In April 1644, he advanced to Peking, but was repulsed by the Manchus in June. He fled back to the west, and was killed in June or July 1645.
