A souvenir issue of gold dollars was struck to mark the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, held in Portlan , Oregon, in 1905. Their famous exploration of the western portion of the the claimed U.S. territories from St. Louis to Oregon occurred in 1804 - 1805. The sales of these coins helped finance a bronze statue memorializing Sacagawea, a Shoshone Indian guide, who assisted immensely in the important expedition. A history of the expedition, it's trials and it's accomplishments, is well worth reading about.
Mintage records maintain that 10,025 coins remained for the 1904 strike with 10,041 remaining for 1905. More than half of those minted were melted for both years.
