The Grand Duchy of Hesse existed until the end of World War I. Even though Germany was united in 1871 by Bismarck, States were permitted to issue 2 to 5 Mark coins under their cognizance. This is a commemorative 2 Mark issued in 1904 to honor the 400th anniversary of the birth of Philipp the Magnificent.
