CHINA. China - United States. "Freedom" Dollar, ND (1990). EXTREMELY FINE. Countermark: ABOUT UNCIRCULATED.
"CHINA FREEDOM DOLLAR SUPPORT THE FEDERATION SAVE THE STUDENTS" around anti-communist symbol on obverse (in Chinese) and reverse (in English) on Year 3 (1914) Yuan Shih-kai Dollar. Comes with flyer from the B.C.S.S.A.
These pieces were made following the 1989 Tiananmen Square incident in Beijing by the Berkeley Chinese Students & Scholars Association (B.C.S.S.A.) to help raise funds for Chinese exchange students stranded in the USA. (Stack's Bowers Lot description).
I'm not sure of the scarcity of the Yuan Shih-kai dollar compared to the others, three of which are in the Moneta Museum. This example is not in the Museum (yet?). I've seen one other sell recently at auction (Heritage or Album) at better than $2k. I suppose that makes it the most desirable of those available, but there is no complete accounting of which crowns the Chinese Students used for their counterstrikes.
